Diez showed the Soba collection, which he designed in 2015, during his talk at the Design Indabaconference in Cape Town earlier this month.

It features a bamboo bench and a pair of trestles that can support a tabletop. Each trunk has been left in its natural state, and the furniture is assembled by threading cords through the canes and tying individual parts together.

The furniture, which can be delivered flat-pack, uses strong kevlar rope that ends in a wooden handle, allowing joints to be tightened once the pieces are assembled.

The Munich-based industrial designercreated the series in partnership withnon-profit initiative Japan Creative, which emphasises the use of traditional Japanese crafts for contemporary pieces. Each year it invites three designers from Europe and the US to take part in workshops on traditional materials or ways of working.

He decided to use untreated canes as a contrast to Japan's many uses of processed bamboo – in yarn, brush bristles, or woven baskets, for example.

The furniture takes only a few moments to assemble, with its unprocessed surface gradually changing from light green to grey as it ages.

Interest in bamboo as a material, for both buildings and smaller design projects, is increasing. The plant grows rapidly and can be raised without relying on pesticides or fertilisers.

At the World Architecture Festival 2015, Dirk Hebel claimed it could offer a sustainable alternative to steel, and brands including Muuto and IKEA have incorporated it into homeware.

Diez, who has worked as an assistant to both Richard Sapper and Konstantin Grcic, opened his own studio in Munich in 2003. He's collaborated with several brands, designing chairs for German furniture company e15 and office furniture for Hay.

Drill a single hole in each frame rail(C)at 33 cm from the end of the bamboo pole. The hole should have a diameter of 5 cm.

Place frame rails(C)of the bamboo chair into the crossbars(B)so they form a closed frame. Draw a line on one of the crossbars(B1)that connects the outside of the frame rails and then mark the center.

Drill a single hole in the crossbar(B1)of 5 cm diameter. The hole must be drilled so it touches the previously marked line and not through the line!

Place the center support(A)in a miter box or workbench and cut the end of the bamboo pole at a 30 degree angle.

Place the other end of the center support(A)in the miter box or workbench and make another 30 degree cut at 52 cm from the previous one.

Drill a hole of 5 cm diameter through both sides of the center support(A). The center of the hole should be 19 cm from the far end of the bamboo pole.

Rotate the center support(A)90 degrees and drill another hole of 5 cm diameter at a distance of 7.5 cm from the nearest end.

Cut bamboo pole(F)lengthwise into at least 8 parts. Each of these portions must be thinned to form dowels of 20 cm long and 1.5 cm in diameter at one end and 4 mm at the other end.

Make 6 perforations of approximately 8 mm diameter that cross the junctions between parts(B-C)and(C-E). Drill the perforations towards the junctions and not in the center of the bamboo canes. This will make the joints much stronger.

The dowels are struck with a mallet until they come out at the other end of the perforations. Once the dowels are inserted properly the excess is cut off. A drop of wood glue may be used, although not necessary.

Place bamboo cane(D)and drill perforations for the dowels. The first perforation(1)is made vertically between bamboo cane(D)and crossbar(B). The second perforation is made horizontally between bamboo cane(D)and center support(A).

Grown in west-central Alabama by retired Anglican Bishop, Edward Whatley who read an article which stated that those who practice the Shinto religion in Japan have a single piece of square bamboo in their prayer corner.

Research and reading led Bishop Whatley to discover that the Japanese pioneered the technique of squaring bamboo centuries ago, but they generally stopped making it in the 1920’s.  Nowhere online or in books could he find anyone who currently squares bamboo. Hence, he set out on a journey to form his own. A Japanese friend took an interest in his project and assisted Bishop Whatley in locating the formula.

So now Bishop Whatley “squares” his own bamboo. He has found that Giant Henon Gray and Vivax, of the 8 varieties he grows, work best, though he is also experimenting with black bamboo (P. nigra).

Last year he built and set out over 100  frames. This season he will set out some 200 or more frames, with each frame being used 2 or 3 times in the season. Bishop Whatley also makes Harajuku lights and “crooked hiking sticks”.

For long life, bamboo needs to have its starch content reduced. This is accomplished by first air drying, and then by soaking the poles in water for a few weeks. See: networkearth.org Spanish: bambubrasileiro.com
