Bamboo Products: ideally, the stems are harvested when they are 5 years old. Younger stems are not fully lignified and, therefore, the material will not have the right density and is not hard enough. Older stems turn grey, resulting in unattractive stains in final products. The quality of the bamboo stems can be partly determined during purchasing, but this is difficult to see in the new final product as the bamboo can still behave in an unexpected way later on when low quality stems have been used. Pros And Cons Of Bamboo Flooring Vs. Laminate

Freshly harvested bamboo stems are cut into strips, and this production process consists of more than just slicing the hollow bamboo stem into pieces. When removing the skin, bamboo material is also lost, which is considered waste that can be used as biomass for energy production. The more bamboo that is removed and turned into biomass, the more expensive the remaining strip becomes meaning the best bamboo strips have no skin left, thus are the most expensive strips. When determining the quality of the strips, it is the purchasing phase that is of importance, but you will not directly see the difference in the final product. MOSO

Laminated bamboo products come in two standard colours: Ecru and Caramel. Bamboo’s original, natural colour is light brown with a yellowish tint. By treating bamboo with steam, the light brown colour becomes more intense and the yellow shade disappears, we call this Ecru. By increasing the temperature and pressure during the steam treatment, they become darker and more brownish: Caramel. Ecru and Caramel strips are suitable for indoor use and, only after impregnation, Caramel strips are also suitable for outdoor use. The bamboo strips will be dried until they reach the necessary moisture percentage for further production.

Bamboo is, like any other natural material, affected by moisture: it expands when its moisture content increases and contracts when its moisture content decreases. It is crucial that the moisture content is lowered and controlled in drying rooms within each production step. The moisture content of the final product determines significantly the way bamboo products behave after installation. A large difference in moisture content can create big problems. As an example: when installing a product with a too high moisture content in a dry area, the bamboo product will shrink because the moisture content decreases in the new situation. Since bamboo is a natural product and only a steam process is used to change the colour of the strips, it is possible that there are slight differences in colour between the individual strips. Before the strips are ready to be processed further, they will be sorted by colour tone and checked for their quality. While many producers make bamboo products of the mixed coloured strips they have in stock, MOSO

Quality requirements. Until bio-glues can be used in production, without compromising quality, glue from respectable brands is used, ensuring the lowest emissions and best bonding. The type and amount of glue is very hard to determine once the final product is manufactured. Glue costs are significantly decisive on the total production costs. Depending on the type of product and required dimensions, the bamboo strips can be glued together in different ways. In the Plain Pressed variation, the bamboo strips are placed horizontally and in the Side Pressed variation, the bamboo strips are placed vertically. Each type of glue requires a certain temperature and compression to cure. Besides the quality of the glue, this curing process defines the quality of the end product. If the glue is not cured well, the bamboo can delaminate after a certain period of time.

Laminated bamboo is, compared with wood, very steady in terms of stability and structure (no knots, no resins coming out). Laminated bamboo is a versatile product that can be used for a wide range of different applications.Bamboo Caramel Narrow Cane wood veneer sheet. Bamboo is available in four different color and grain variations. Caramel and blonde colors and wide and narrow cane. Wide Bamboo strands or striations are about 1″ wide. Narrow Bamboo is about 1/4″ approximately. Sometimes just referred to as light and dark Bamboo. The Blonde is sometimes called Natural Bamboo. The lighter is a yellowish color and the darker is a brown color.

Laminated Bamboo Production

Paper backer = 1/40” thickness and will be a Beige color or a Brown color. Whichever matches the wood best. Paper backer flexibility will generally wrap around a soda can as example. The paper remains on the product and holds it together at the seams and during lamination to a substrate.

Wood backer = 1/25” thickness and currently is an Ash composite color, but some items may have Okuome Mahogany. The grain on the backing sheet runs the opposite direction of the face wood veneer in order to minimize the pull of the grain from the front side. Wood backer is sometimes preferred because it will absorb contact cement better than paper backer and it is thicker. Wood backer flexibility will generally wrap around a 2 liter soda bottle as example.

PSA backer = 1/40” thickness. This is peel and stick pressure sensitive adhesive made by 3M. PSA products have a paper backer on them with the adhesive added to that backer and protected by a liner film that peels off when ready to apply to a substrate. Wood backed products can also have PSA added. PSA size limitation is 4’ wide and 12’ long since the PSA comes from 4’ wide longer rolls. 3M offers a high quality adhesive that works well when applied to a proper surface. This product eliminates the need for brushes, contact cement and the chemical odor that comes with contact cement.

Paper and wood backed products are generally applied with contact cement since that process doesn’t require pressure. There are many other methods including white and yellow wood glues, but these require pressure as with a press, clamping or a vacuum bag. A simple search using the terms “how to apply wood veneer” will produce many results. Most of our products will accept any finish or stain. Generally, sizes under 4’ x 12’ will ship within 1-2 days with some exceptions. 5’ wide items usually will require a lead time of 1-2 weeks. Some sizes may be available, but not show pricing. All backed veneer products will ship rolled in long narrow boxes that are proven effective to arrive without damage. Pros

A great deal of time, effort and editing goes into photographs of our products. Most pictures are “representative” of what the product will actually look like except with “composite” reconstituted engineered woods which will always have the name composite in the item description and usually a code number or letters. These products will look extremely close to what is received, which is one of many things that makes them attractive. But natural grown wood veneer products will vary in color and grain and some reasonableness expected.
